We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Emergency Services Centre (ESC) team as an ESC Officer.  You will work as part of a dedicated team providing a 24/7 service for Ipswich Borough Council.

The main areas of operation you will deal with are:

  • Monitoring of closed-circuit television (CCTV)
  • Co-ordinating a response to the Home Emergency Alarms Response Service (HEARS)
  • Taking out of hours calls from members of the public and external bodies

The role is challenging and varied and requires good organisational skills and an excellent telephone manner.  You will deal with customers, internal departments, and external agencies to provide support in emergency situations.

You will need excellent communication skills as you will be operating various computer systems, radios, and alarm equipment. You will be dealing with sensitive data and must follow current procedures and understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality.

Day to Day

The shift will be spent in the Emergency Services Centre (ESC) Control Room based at Grafton House. (Ipswich Borough Council HQ)

Shift and Rota Patterns

The Emergency Services Centre Officer currently operates on three shifts every 24 hours consisting of an early, late, and night shift.

Early shift:          06:30 – 14.45 hrs

Late shift:           14.30 – 22.45 hrs

Night shift:         22.30 – 06.45 hrs

The hours of work are 17 per week on a set shift pattern which consists of one early, one late and one-night shift on a recurring shift pattern.  It therefore includes evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays working.

The shift cycle consists of:

  • Three shifts consisting of 7.917 hours (1 x early/day off/1 x late/day off/1 x night) followed by 4 days off.
  • Once every 10 cycles of this patten there is a two-week float period during which you are required to work either 4 or 5 shifts of whatever type is available (early/late/night) as required by the service.

About You

You must be educated with 5 GCSE’s, or an NVQ Level 3 and 2 years qualitive experience in a related field.

Previous experience in dealing with the public and an excellent ability to operate windows-based software is essential.  A high level of concentration is required whilst on shift to be able to quickly assess and deal effectively with a range of problems as they occur.

You will need to hold or be willing to train for a Public Space CCTV Surveillance SIA licence.

A Full UK Driving License and an enhanced DBS Disclosure and a Police Vetting Clearance will be required for this post.
