Apprentice Carpenter
The role of an Apprentice Carpenter within Maintenance & Contracts is an excellent opportunity to learn from skilled experienced members of staff, this will be a varied role with guidance from all colleagues to ensure we give you all the support to complete your apprenticeship qualification. Maintenance & Contracts are looking for an enthusiastic individual, who has a keen willingness to learn the trade skill of Carpentry, we are looking for someone who is motivated and hardworking and understands they must always act in a professional manner remembering whilst wearing your uniform you are representing Ipswich Borough Council. Listening skills are vitally important, we will expect you to listen to your mentor to always ask questions if unsure, you will be expected to keep a diary of works carried out and understand that the information you write can be put towards evidence in your college portfolio.
The role within our repairs team will be working within tenanted properties often with vulnerable tenants, you will always act in a respectful manner. Maintenance & Contracts takes Health & Safety very seriously and all employees have a duty to co-operate in implementing the Health & Safety policy: By acting with due care for the health, safety and welfare of themselves, their colleagues and other persons. You will be buddied with a mentor from within the carpentry team and will spend time with each carpenter gaining skills and knowledge from each person. You may be required to pass tools to colleagues and help to diagnose repairs required, assisting them with counting imprest stock on stock count days twice a year. Our repairs team are extremely busy and completed just short of 23000 repairs in the past financial year.
The team work across all 4 post codes of the Ipswich Town boundary IP1, IP2, IP3, IP4. You may be required from time to time to support colleagues from different trades if a buddy is required for example to foot a ladder. You will have access to online E-learning training and additional training courses as and when these are booked in: for example, manual handling and Asbestos awareness.
Hours of work are 8am – 4.30pm Mon – Thur with 1 hour for lunch then 8am – 3.30pm on Friday with a 30-minute lunchbreak. You will be based from our main depot Layard House, New Way, Ipswich IP2 0BX, you will be expected to make your own way to the depot ready for your mentor to pick you up each day. You will be enrolled at college on a day release scheme which we presume will be one day a week, but the course will be confirmed in more detail nearer to September. You will be expected to make your own way to college with the exact location depending on course availability TBC (Could be Suffolk New, could be Suffolk Rural). You will be provided with full IBC uniform including all PPE required.
Enthusiastic person, willing to learn and understand the role of an apprentice is a varied role, we will expect you to be punctual and reliable and be ready to put 100% effort in obtaining your City & Guilds Carpentry qualification. We would expect you to be a good communicator both verbally and in writing. To be a good listener, hardworking, polite, someone who can follow instructions and always adhere to policies and procedures. Ultimately, we want the successful applicant to enjoy their apprenticeship, and you will reap the rewards from working with experienced colleagues, but we will expect hard work and dedication to complete your apprenticeship. And we want you to be proud to gain your qualification whilst working for Ipswich Borough Council.
Hours of work are 37 per week, Monday to Friday with college attendance on a day TBC.
