The Greenways Countryside Project is a long standing and very well-respected partnership between Ipswich Borough Council, East Suffolk Council and Babergh District Council. The Project is based within Ipswich Borough Council’s Countryside and Wildlife Team, in turn part of the Parks and Cemeteries Service.

The Project looks after around 50 nature reserves and green spaces in and around the town, ranging from the 250 acre informal country park, Belstead Brook Park; the River Gipping corridor and Sproughton Nature Reserve; to small, local community spaces. The Project is very practically focussed and delivers a very wide-ranging programme of site management and enhancement, largely due to a very dedicated and experienced volunteer base.

Due to the retirement of the previous postholder, we are looking to recruit a new Ranger to assist the Countryside and Wildlife Manager with the delivery of the day-to-day management of our reserves and green spaces.

The Project has a very small staff team, but a very demanding schedule of work – so the role will suit a very dedicated and hard-working practical person with a wide range of skills and experience along with the ability to work on their own initiative when required.

The ideal postholder will have experience of working with different volunteers, along with broad land management experience including use of tractors and mounted machinery, chainsaws, brush cutters and mowers, along with their basic maintenance. A good working knowledge of wildlife habitat and access management techniques is also essential.

If you would like to discuss the post informally, please contact James Baker, Countryside and Wildlife Manager via email: james.baker@ipswich.gov.uk

As well as a good salary, we offer a career average pension scheme, generous holiday and sick pay entitlements, subsidised parking for work and leisure, public transport discounts, free swimming and gym membership, cycle purchase scheme, plenty of personal and professional development opportunities, flexible working, hybrid working opportunities, Employee Assistance Programme and the opportunity to work with great colleagues.

If you require any assistance or reasonable adjustments during the application or recruitment process, please let us know so that the appropriate arrangements can be put in place.
